We get asked this question all the time. The answer is actually pretty straightforward:Sub domain
- Lets say your domain is mysite.com.
- You install a Message Board and put in in a directory called mysite.com/board/.
- You can turn the directory board into a sub-domain by adding it as a sub-domain from your Control Panel.
- Now you can access your Message board as either mysite.com/board OR bo
ard.mysite.com - This costs you nothing and is free.
- You have two domains mysite.com and my-
other-site.com. - mysite.com is the domain of your website and you want to add my-other-site.com.
- You want them both to go to the same place. In other words, when someone types either www.mysite.comor www.
my-other-site.com they will go to the same page(s) on your website. - In order to have additional parked domains you need to purchase them from a registry.
- Register Parked domains here (open a new account if you don't have one registered)
- You have two domains mysite.com and my-
other-site.com. - You want the two domains to be totally separate/independent websites.
- In order to have additional add-on domains you need to purchase them from a registry.
- Register Add-on domains here (open a new account if you don't have one registered)
OK SO WHAT MUST I DO TO MAKE IT ALL HAPPEN?
Procedure - Parked and Add-On Domains (THE ORDER IS IMPORTANT)
- Register the domain. (If you do not have an account here, you need to create a new account. This is notthe same as your webnet77 account -- you will receive a new username and password from the registry. Keep it safe).
- Make sure the Name Servers at the Registrar point to our DNS. - when ordering a new domain make sure the "use Webnet77 nameservers" or "use default nameservers" is checked. To set the DNS manually, check your original welcome email (near the top) for the DNS settings.
- Add the domain only once from your Control Panel as either a Parked or Add-On Domain by locating the Add-on or parked domains link in your control panel. (Trying to add it more than once can break things on your website).
- TIP: if you add a domain as a parked domain (or as an add-on) and change your mind and want to change it to the other flavor, simply login to your Control Panel and then locate whichever of add-on or parked domains it currently is and delete it. Once the domain has been deleted, you can safely add it back as the "other" one.
- TIP: When you add an add-on domain, use the domain name as the folder name. This will be the folder it creates on the server for the "root" directory for this domain. Having it the same as the domain name makes it easy to identify if you have many folders.
- TIP: To FTP directly to your new add-on domain, the
- Server: domain-you-just-
created.com - FTP username: username-you-just-created@
domain-you-just-created.com - Password: the password you entered.
- Server: domain-you-just-
- IMPORTANT: When adding add-on domains use a decent password. (Use the password strength meter to make sure it's 80% or higher)
Procedure - SUB-DOMAINS
- You can add a sub-domain whenever you like and there is nothing you need to register at the registry.
- Add the sub-domain(s) only once from your Control Panel.
